Celebrating Students and Our Community

A message from Dr. St. John

Dear SACS Families and Caregivers,

As fall break approaches, I hope your family has time to rest, recharge and enjoy being together. These first weeks of school have given us much to celebrate, from academic progress and exceptional educators to community gatherings and new opportunities for our students and families.

Academic Update

Our students continued to demonstrate achievement and growth on the 2025–26 ILEARN assessment. The percentage of SACS students proficient in both English language arts and math now stands 17 percentage points above the state average, widening our lead from 11.4 percentage points two years ago. This progress reflects our students’ hard work and the dedication of the teachers, staff and families who support them. We are proud of these results and will use them to strengthen instruction, build on what is working and provide additional support where students need it.

Our Staff

I often say our staff is our greatest asset, and Homestead High School’s Jason Witzigreuter, the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year, is a wonderful example. Governor Mike Braun and Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner visited Homestead for the surprise announcement, honoring Jason’s outstanding work among approximately 65,000 teachers statewide. We are proud of his lasting impact on thousands of students and grateful for the exceptional educators throughout SACS.

Our Community

That same spirit of appreciation extends to our community. Thank you to everyone who helped make Under the Lights such a memorable evening. Despite uncertain weather earlier in the day, thousands gathered to celebrate our students, schools and the connections that make SACS special. Our volunteers, school groups, community partners, and donors made it all possible.
There are more opportunities to come together this fall, and I hope you will join us.

Elementary Playground Celebrations

Our new elementary playgrounds offer more than fun. They create opportunities for children of all abilities to explore, build friendships and play together. Haverhill’s playground is now open, and we invite you to celebrate Aboite’s opening on Thursday, October 22, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Covington’s opening is planned for November 6, with ribbon-cutting details coming after fall break. These inclusive spaces welcome students during the school day and children and families throughout our community beyond school hours.

CTE Groundbreaking

On Tuesday, October 27, at 10 a.m., SACS will break ground for our new Career and Technical Education Center (CTE), to be constructed behind Covington Elementary. This investment in our students’ futures will expand hands-on learning and career exploration, connecting classroom instruction to opportunities after high school. Explore more about the anticipated programming and watch for further information coming soon.

These opportunities reflect a shared commitment to helping our students learn, grow and belong and keeping our community connected to that work. Thank you for your continued support of our schools and for the partnership you bring to your children’s education.
